Bricklaying, plumbing, catering... FG unveils 26 trades for technical education curriculum

The federal government has introduced 26 technical educationtrade areas in a move it says would align Nigeria’s skills acquisition with industrydemands. The reform will take effect from the 2025/2026 academicyear. Folasade Boriowo, the education ministry’s spokesperson,said the trade areas will see all federal science and technical colleges(FSTCs) transition to full-fledged federal technical colleges. Under the new structure, students will be required to takeone trade course alongside general subjects. She said Tunji Alausa, the minister of education, statedthat the move is part of an effort to “reduce overload” and produce a moreskilled workforce. The 26 trades, modernised to reflect industry needs,include: Brick Laying, Block Laying and ConcretingWoodwork, Carpentry and JoineryPlumbing and Pipe FittingComputer Hardware & GSM Repair and MaintenanceRefrigeration & Air-conditioning WorksMechanised Agriculture (Mechanics or Operations/ SmartAgriculture)Autobody WorksCatering Craft PracticeSolar PV Installation and MaintenanceFashion Design and Garment MakingLivestock Farming/Animal HusbandryFish Farming Activity (Aquaculture)Motorcycle & Tricycle RepairsPainting, Decoration, and Finishes (Interior Design)Welding & FabricationAuto-Electrical WiringAuto-Mobile MechanicsBeauty Therapy & CosmetologyCreative Media (Digital Media Production)Electronic Systems Maintenance CraftFurniture Making & UpholsteryNetworking & System Security (Satellite TV Antennainstallation and maintenance)Social Media Content Creation and ManagementTiling & Cladding (Tilling and decorative stonework orFloor cover installation)Automobile CNG Conversion and MaintenanceLeather WorksThe reform also introduces “Citizenship and HeritageStudies,” a subject that combines Nigerian history, civic education, and socialstudies. The ministry said this will “ground students in nationalvalues” and better equip students to contribute to national development.
