Police bust gang ‘posing as security operatives’ to ‘steal car parts’ in Lagos

The Lagos police command has arrested Jude Onouha, analleged 46-year-old kingpin of a notorious gang. According to the police, the group disguises as securitypersonnel to vandalise high-end vehicles in the city. The police added that the gang uses fake security uniforms,and a modified Mercedes-Benz car jack made to look like a firearm, to gainaccess into gated communities. According to Babaseyi Oluseyi, deputy police publicrelations officer, the gang deceived residential estate security by posing asoperatives conducting investigations. “The suspect and his gang specialized in disguisingthemselves as security operatives, wearing fake uniforms and using a modifiedMercedes-Benz car jack, crafted to resemble a firearm, to deceive unsuspectingestate security personnel,” the statement reads. “Under the false pretense of conducting securityinvestigations, they gained access into several residential estates.” “Once inside, they targeted luxury SUVs including ToyotaHilux, Toyota Highlander, Lexus 650, and Mercedes-Benz models, systematicallyremoving expensive components such as brainboxes, wiring systems, side mirrors,and control devices.” The police said Onouha is cooperating with detectives andhas confessed to the crime as investigations continue. Police recovered the fake firearm, and a cap labelled‘Special Force’, with the command adding that efforts are underway to apprehendother gang members. The command urged estate managers and security guards toverify the identity of anyone claiming to be a security officer before grantingaccess. The police said residents are encouraged to contact theirlocal divisional police officer or the command’s emergency numbers for verificationand quick response
