Super Falcons forward Ifeoma Onumonu has retired from professional football, ending a distinguished career that saw her shine for both club and country, as announced in a statement to the press on Friday. The 31-year-old, known for her pace and goal-scoring prowess, cited a desire to explore new personal and professional paths as the reason for her decision.Onumonu, who represented Nigeria at the 2019 and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cups, earned 20 caps and scored crucial goals, including a standout performance in the Super Falcons’ historic run to the Round of 16 in 2023. She also enjoyed a successful club career, playing for top teams like NJ/NY Gotham FC in the U.S. National Women’s Soccer League and Montpellier HSC in France’s Division 1 Féminine.“It’s been an incredible journey representing Nigeria and playing at the highest levels,” Onumonu said. “I’m grateful for the support of my teammates, coaches, and fans, but I feel it’s time to turn the page and embrace new challenges.” She hinted at future endeavors in sports advocacy and mentoring young female athletes in Nigeria.The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) praised Onumonu’s contributions, with General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi describing her as “a true ambassador of Nigerian football.” Fans and teammates flooded social media with tributes, celebrating her legacy as a trailblazer for women’s football in Africa.
