The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully neutralized several bandits in a precision airstrike operation along the Mariga axis of Niger State, targeting armed groups spotted moving stolen cattle. The coordinated air interdiction, part of an ongoing counter-banditry campaign, was launched following credible intelligence and surveillance reports of bandit activity in the region. The airstrikes struck a large convoy of armed bandits around Yabawa, Bazana, Awallah, Dankolo, Kumbashi, and Kakihum in Mariga Local Government Area, where they were attempting to escape with cattle stolen from Ragada and nearby villages. Local accounts confirmed that the operation neutralized several bandits, with survivors fleeing into surrounding forests in disarray. A Ragada resident, who escaped during the strikes, recounted, “When the jet began bombing, God saved me; that was how I escaped from their hands,” praising the NAF’s timely intervention.Eyewitnesses reported multiple explosions, thick smoke, and sporadic gunfire as the swift and precise operation unfolded, leaving surviving bandits scattered. Ground troops from the Nigerian Army, stationed in Rijau, Warari, and Gulbin Boka, provided critical support by sealing escape routes and securing nearby communities hosting internally displaced persons (IDPs).Residents hailed the operation as a decisive blow against banditry, which has plagued the region. Mallam Musa Ali, a community leader from Kumbashi, said, “We have not slept in peace for months, but this operation has brought us hope. The Air Force and soldiers have shown that the government is serious about ending banditry.”Intelligence reports indicate that another armed group moving stolen cattle from Magama Local Government toward the Kakihum–Kumbashi axis was recently sighted, hinting at potential further operations. Local sources noted that at least seven bandit groups have been active in the Mariga, Rijau, and Magama corridor, but the recent airstrikes have disrupted their plans.Communities in Yabawa, Awallah, and Dankolo expressed optimism that sustained military efforts will restore peace and enable displaced residents to return home, marking a significant step in dismantling bandit networks across North Central Nigeria.
