The Presidency has refuted Western media reports alleging a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria, calling them misleading and damaging to the nation’s reputation. In a significant meeting with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) leadership at their National Secretariat in Abuja, Dr. Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Media and Policy Communication to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, clarified that Nigeria’s insecurity stems from economic challenges, extremist ideologies, and climate change, not religious motives.“President Tinubu deeply respects the Christian community and values the Church’s role in fostering peace and unity,” Bwala stated. “The ‘Christian genocide’ narrative is false and driven by political agendas, not reality.” He referenced reports from the U.S. Institute of Peace, Transparency International, and Human Rights Watch, noting that conflicts, initially religious in tone, have morphed into broader socio-economic issues affecting all regions.CAN President, Most Rev. Dr. Daniel Okoh, praised Tinubu’s commitment to dialogue, affirming CAN’s role as a partner in promoting peace and national unity. “We appreciate President Tinubu’s direct engagement,” Okoh said, inviting Bwala to address CAN’s upcoming National Assembly to deepen collaboration.The meeting included key CAN figures such as Rev. Dr. Stephen Panya Baba (Vice President), Apostle Prof. Samson Fatokun (General Secretary), and others. Bwala reiterated the administration’s dedication to inclusive governance, emphasizing, “The Church is a critical ally in nation-building, and your insights guide our efforts toward unity and security.”
