Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in 2023, has declared his party fully open to strategic alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, including with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former President Goodluck Jonathan, or Labour Party’s Peter Obi, but only on the strict condition that such partnerships deliver tangible benefits to ordinary Nigerians.Speaking in a widely circulated BBC Hausa interview from his Miller Road residence in Kano, the former two-term Kano governor and recent 69th birthday celebrant issued a blunt challenge to potential suitors: “If you are asking us to join APC, you must tell us what NNPP will gain.”Kwankwaso, who welcomed a high-powered delegation led by Buhari Bakwana, former political adviser to ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, alongside APC members from all 44 Kano local government areas, underscored the NNPP’s national footprint. “We have gubernatorial candidates in all states and full structures nationwide. What will you offer them if we join?” he pressed. His remarks follow a September declaration that the NNPP would consider merging with the APC only if clear advantages are outlined for his party’s base. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has held at least two closed-door meetings with Kwankwaso in the past two years, recently referred to the NNPP leader as “a friend within the progressive fold” a gesture Kwankwaso neither confirmed nor rebuffed.Yet the Kano political titan drew a red line: any alliance must prioritize the welfare of the common man. “We’re ready for anyone, APC, PDP, ADC, Jonathan, or Peter Obi—if we are satisfied with their competence and integrity,” he said. “The key is that whoever we ally with must be committed to the needs of Nigerians. If they fail to meet our expectations, we would not continue with them.”Kwankwaso painted a grim picture of Nigeria’s current state to justify his stance: Bandits killing farmers in Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna while elites “flee to Abuja, living in luxury.” Lawmakers and ministers “enriching themselves, buying big houses, flaunting expensive cars.” Youth denied education, citizens deprived of security, and the masses abandoned. “Allah will judge them accordingly,” he warned. He predicted the 2027 elections will be unprecedentedly fierce, driven by a newly awakened electorate. “People are now more involved, more concerned. "Thanks to radio and social media, the masses are informed. This time, nobody will come on election day asking for money to vote. You may see new things unfold, things that have never happened before in Nigeria’s electoral history.”
