The Nigerian Army marked a smooth leadership handover today at its Abuja headquarters, with Major General Waidi Shaibu officially taking over as the 25th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) from Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, who transitions to Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).The ceremony, attended by senior military officers, featured the signing of handover notes, the decoration of the new COAS with Army Headquarters insignia, an inspection of the quarter guard, and group photographs with principal staff and field commanders.In his inaugural address, Maj Gen Shaibu praised Lt Gen Oluyede for his exemplary guidance, particularly in advancing equipment procurement, infrastructure upgrades, and the "Soldier First" initiative that bolsters troop welfare and readiness."I pledge to build on these solid foundations, fostering greater collaboration with security agencies and government bodies to fortify national defence," Shaibu said. He committed to a thorough assessment of ongoing threats, rapid responses to emerging challenges, and enhancements in operational effectiveness and soldier morale.Saluting the resilience of frontline troops, Shaibu remarked, "Their courage, passion, discipline, and sacrifices are the bedrock of our victories." He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief, for the appointment and led senior officers in a minute of silence for fallen comrades.In his farewell remarks, outgoing COAS Lt Gen Oluyede thanked President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and lauded the Army's personnel for their unwavering dedication. "Extend the same loyalty to your new leader the mission endures: safeguarding lives and our nation's sovereignty," he urged.Earlier, Maj Gen Abdulsalami Ibrahim, the former Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), hailed Oluyede as a visionary and selfless leader whose impact will echo through generations.
