Tinubu approves establishment of Federal University of Science, Technology in Epe

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishmentof the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, Lagos State, markingthe end of a seven-year moratorium earlier imposed by the Federal Government onthe creation of new tertiary institutions. The approval was formally announced by Senate PresidentGodswill Akpabio during Thursday’s plenary session, where he confirmed that thePresident had signed the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe(Establishment) Bill, 2025, into law. “It is my honour to announce that the Federal University ofScience and Technology, Epe (Establishment) Bill, 2025, has been assented to byHis Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Akpabio declared. According to him, the Senate had earlier transmitted theauthenticated version of the bill to the President, who returned two certifiedcopies bearing his signature, thereby completing the legal process for theinstitution’s establishment. “By this assent, the Federal University of Science andTechnology, Epe, has officially come to stay,” Akpabio stated, congratulatingthe people of Epe and Lagos State on the development. He also praised the President for his continued investmentin the education sector, describing the decision as a demonstration of his“commitment to expanding access to quality, specialized higher education acrossthe country.” The bill’s sponsor, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele,explained that the new institution would focus on science and technology-baseddisciplines critical to national development. These include Mechanical,Electrical, Computer, and Civil Engineering, as well as Computer Science,Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science, all vital todriving Nigeria’s digital transformation and knowledge economy. The approval, however, comes just months after the FederalExecutive Council, FEC, chaired by President Tinubu in August, endorsed aseven-year moratorium on the establishment of new federal universities,polytechnics, and colleges of education.
