The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos State, hasslammed the 2023 Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over hiscomments on the conviction of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra,IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu. Recall that Obi had described Kanu’s arrest, detention andeventual sentencing as unfortunate, adding that the process reflectedleadership gaps and might heighten tensions rather than reduce them. Obi made the remarks in a statement titled ‘Kanu’sConviction: Obi Calls for Dialogue, Healing Over Hostility’, issued by hismedia aide, Ibrahim Umar. Reacting in a statement on Sunday, Lagos APC spokesman SeyeOladejo blasted Obi’s position, saying it was inappropriate for politicalactors to comment on matters still undergoing judicial review. Oladejo warned against making statements that could beinterpreted as undermining national security institutions or court processes. He added that Obi’s comments could be misinterpreted aspoliticizing a sensitive security issue, and urged public figures to avoidremarks capable of inflaming public sentiment. The statement further argued that consistent and balancedengagement is essential when addressing issues of national security and publicorder, stressing that all parties should respect judicial outcomes whileallowing room for lawful appeal and dialogue where necessary. “National security matters should not be influenced bypolitical considerations and advised leaders to prioritize unity and stabilityin their public communication. “The Federal Government remains committed to handling issuesrelated to terrorism, treason, and national stability in accordance with thelaw and the constitution. “We urge Nigerians to view Obi’s statement within thebroader context of ongoing political discourse and encouraged restraint, emphasizing the need for responsible public commentary on matters of nationalimportance,” the statement said.
