Nigeria Re-elected to IMO Council After 14-Year Gap

Nigeria has been re-elected to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council in Category C for the 2026–2027 biennium, securing one of the 20 seats reserved for nations with the largest interest in international seaborne trade.The election took place Friday during the 34th IMO Assembly in London, marking Nigeria’s return to the influential council after a 14-year absence.President Bola Tinubu welcomed the outcome as global recognition of Nigeria’s growing stature in maritime affairs and a vote of confidence in his administration’s blue economy agenda.In a statement by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised Marine and Blue Economy Minister Adegboyega Oyetola, NIMASA leadership, and Nigeria’s diplomatic team for the successful campaign.“Nigeria’s re-election reflects the international community’s trust in our commitment to safer shipping, maritime security, environmental protection, and global standards,” President Tinubu said.He added that the mandate will strengthen efforts to modernise ports, combat piracy, and position Nigeria as the undisputed maritime hub of West and Central Africa.President Tinubu thanked IMO member states for their support and pledged Nigeria’s active contribution toward cleaner oceans and more efficient global shipping.
