US President Donald Trump is the first-ever recipient of thenew FIFA Peace Prize. Trump was awarded the prize on Friday during the group stagedraw for the 2026 World Cup in Washington, D.C. According to Gianni Infantino, FIFA president, the award wasintroduced this year to honour “individuals who have taken exceptional andextraordinary actions for peace and by doing so have united people across theworld”. Trump was presented with a golden trophy for the prize,accompanied by a medal which the US president immediately wore by himself. Hewas also presented with a certificate of achievement. Trump described the award as “truly one of the great honoursof my life”. He then claimed that his administration has saved “tens ofmillions of lives” through diplomatic interventions and had “stopped warshappening just before they started”. “The Congo is an example, over 10 million people killed, andit was heading for another 10 million very quickly,” the US president said. “India and Pakistan, so many different wars we were able toend, in some cases just before they started.” Trump had been campaigning to win the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize,but the honour eventually went to María Corina Machado of Venezuela. The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States,Canada and Mexico. The competition will run from June 11 to July 19.
