Ogun to enforce jail term, N2m fine for illegal waste disposal

The Ogun government says it will begin enforcing athree-month jail term or a N2 million fine for indiscriminate waste disposalacross the state. Abayomi Hunye, special adviser to the governor on wastemanagement, said residents have continued to dump refuse in unapproved spotsdespite repeated warnings and the availability of designated disposal points. Hunye said the state has recorded a spike in indiscriminatedumping in markets in recent weeks, resulting in blocked drains, pollution andheightened health risks. “Many people habitually dump refuse anywhere they choose,putting public health in jeopardy. The Ogun state government can no longer toleratethis pernicious practice,” he said.“Under the 2020 law establishing the Ogun State WasteManagement Authority, offenders are liable to an initial penalty of N25,000.Upon conviction, they face a maximum fine of N2 million, a three-month jailterm, or both. “There’s a law against this and henceforth, the stategovernment will not hesitate to implement the provisions and bring sanity tothe state.” He added that waste containers have been provided in allapproved markets, but enforcement will now be intensified to ensure compliance.
