The Nigerian Senate has granted President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy troops to the Republic of Benin for a regional peace-support operation, in strict compliance with Section 5(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the expeditious approval moments after a brief closed-door session on Monday, stating that the deployment is aimed at ensuring lasting peace, stability, and preventing a humanitarian crisis in the West African sub-region.“The Senate believes this is a step in the right direction and a demonstration of Nigeria’s continued leadership in promoting peace and security across Africa,” Akpabio said.The resolution was passed unanimously with no dissenting voice. Details of the troop strength, duration, and exact mandate of the mission were not disclosed in the open session.
