The Lagos state police command says a police officerattacked in a viral video was performing official duties and was wronglyaccused of stealing. The video, which circulated on social media on Wednesday,showed the officer with a swollen face and a bleeding nose, surrounded bymembers of the public shouting “ole” (thief). Another officer was seen trying to intervene as the crowdclosed in. Abimbola Adebisi, Lagos police spokesperson, described thenarrative accompanying the video as “false and misleading”. She noted that the officer, attached to the Lagos statetaskforce, was enforcing a ban on illegal parking along Brown street, Oshodi,when the confrontation occurred. The incident escalated after the officer stopped a motoristattempting to park improperly. During the altercation, the officer accidentallydischarged his firearm, causing debris to hit bystanders. “The motorist became violent, resulting in a heatedconfrontation,” Adebisi said. “During the incident, the Inspector accidentally dischargedshots onto the road, and debris from the impact affected some passersby. “The mob immediately gathered, during which the Inspectorwas violently attacked and sustained serious injuries. “The Inspector has been subjected to disciplinary actions inline with established police procedures for his unprofessional conduct.
