Several worshippers were killed on Tuesday when an explosivedevice went off inside a mosque at Gamborun Market in Maiduguri, the BornoState capital. The explosion occurred while worshippers were observingprayers, triggering panic and confusion within the densely populated marketarea. Eyewitnesses told Zagazola Malala that the blast rippedthrough part of the mosque, killing some worshippers instantly and leavingothers with varying degrees of injuries. Traders and residents fled the scene as thick smoke billowedfrom the mosque, while some people attempted to rescue victims before thearrival of emergency responders. Security operatives swiftly cordoned off the area to preventfurther casualties and to enable a preliminary assessment of the incident. As of the time of filing this report, authorities had notofficially confirmed the number of casualties, while investigations into thecause of the explosion were ongoing.
