The Sokoto government says the US air strikes on ChristmasDay hit terrorist camps in Tangaza LGA of the state. The strikes, which took place late at night, were said tohave targeted ISIS terrorists in the north-western Nigerian state. The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said the operation wasconducted “at the request of Nigerian authorities”. In a statement on Friday, Abubakar Bawa, director-general ofmedia and publicity at the Sokoto government house, said there were no civiliancasualties recorded during the air strikes. Bawa said the impact of the bombardment could not beimmediately assessed, as authorities are awaiting a full report from the jointoperations team. He also said that objects found near Jabo town in TambuwalLGA could not yet be explained, with analysis by Nigerian and US militaryauthorities still ongoing. “Sokoto state welcomes any collaboration between Nigeria andrelevant global stakeholders aimed at curbing terrorism and cross-bordercrimes,” the statement reads. “The ongoing operations are geared towards securing thestate and protecting lives and property.” The government said it has consistently supported securityagencies over the past two years, providing equipment to strengthen effortsagainst banditry and terrorism. It called on residents of affected areas to continuecooperating with security agencies by providing useful information to sustainongoing operations and restore lasting peace.
