The police command in Ogun says a tyre burst caused the roadaccident involving Anthony Joshua, the world heavyweight boxing champion. On Monday, the Lexus Jeep conveying Joshua and two membersof the team crashed into a stationary truck around the Sinoma area near theSagamu, Ogun state. The boxing champion and three other passengers werereportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu when the SUV they were in collidedwith a stationary truck While Joshua survived the incident with minor injuries, hisclose associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami — died. Ghami was Joshua’s long-time friend and his strength andconditioning coach, while Latif served as his personal trainer. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had said itspreliminary findings show that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking were thecause of the motor accident. FRSC said Joshua’s SUV was “travelling beyond the legallyprescribed speed limit on the corridor” and “lost control during an overtakingmanoeuvre” leading to the accident. “The primary causes of the crash, being excessive speed andwrongful overtaking, constitute serious traffic violations and remain among theleading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways,” the agency hadsaid. Providing an update on the incident, Oluseyi Babaseyi, theOgun state police spokesperson, said the accident was caused by a tyre burst. Babaseyi spoke on Tuesday in an interview with the NigerianTelevision Authority (NTA).
