President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of RotimiOyedepo, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), as the new director of publicprosecutions (DPP) in the Federal Ministry of Justice. Oyedepo’s transfer of service from the Economic andFinancial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the mainstream federal civil service wasconfirmed in a letter dated December 23, signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf ofthe chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission. Abiodun Oladunjoye, the State House director of informationand public relations, said in a statement on Tuesday that Oyedepo’s appointmentwas made in the public interest. Oyedepo succeeds Abubakar Babadoko, who is set to retire onDecember 31, 2025, after completing the mandatory eight-year tenure asdirector. “Mr Oyedepo, as DPP, will fill the vacancy occasioned by theretirement of Mr Abubakar Babadoko, who will attain the mandatory eight yearsas a director on December 31, 2025,” the statement reads. “Mr Oyedepo is a 2007 law graduate from the University ofIlorin and attended the Law School in 2008. He is expected to deploy hisexpertise to reduce reliance on external counsel for critical prosecutions andto ensure greater coherence and consistency in the Federal Government’s legalstrategies.” According to the statement, the new DPP has over 15 years ofexperience prosecuting complex economic and financial crime cases at the EFCCand previously headed the commission’s monitoring unit.He was part of the legal team representing the federalgovernment in the high-profile P&ID case (Process and IndustrialDevelopment vs The Federal Republic of Nigeria). Oyedepo has received several accolades, including EFCC’sOutstanding Staff of the Year (2014) and Best Financial Crimes Prosecutor(2019).
