PDP is alive, strong – Jonathan declares

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has described thePeoples Democratic Party (PDP) as “alive, strong, and resilient,” dismissingmedia speculations about the party’s decline. He reaffirmed that the PDP remains a cornerstone ofNigeria’s democracy and is the only surviving original political party since1998. Jonathan made the remarks on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, whilereceiving members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), led by NationalChairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, at his private office in Abuja. The meeting focused on reconciliation within the party andstrategic preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections. Highlighting the party’s historical resilience andinstitutional strength, Jonathan described the PDP as more than a politicalplatform, calling it a national institution. “The PDP has been a critical contributor to our democracysince 1999. I have benefited from this party, serving as Deputy Governor,Governor, Vice President, and President. I am grateful and remain committed tocontributing to its growth,” he said. The former president urged the party leadership toprioritize national interest and institutional development over personalconsiderations, emphasizing that strong political parties are essential fordemocratic stability. Earlier, Turaki thanked Jonathan for his guidance andloyalty, assuring him that the party is implementing a comprehensive “RebirthAgenda” aimed at rebuilding and strengthening the PDP. “Our goal is to return power to the people and repositionthe PDP as the party of the majority of Nigerians. We are engaging aggrievedmembers because a united PDP remains the most viable platform for a balancedand prosperous Nigeria,” Turaki said.Other members of the delegation included former Niger StateGovernor, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Prof. Jerry Gana, Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, HajiyaZainab Maina, Chief Mike Oghiadome, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, and othermembers of the NWC.
