The federal government has commended the Super Eagles fortheir performance and resilience at the tournament despite their defeat. On Wednesday, the Atlas Lions of Morocco defeated the SuperEagles of Nigeria on penalties to reach the final of the 2025 Africa Cup ofNations (AFCON). Mohammed Idris, minister of information and nationalorientation, conveyed the message in a statement on Thursday. He said the team demonstrated character, teamwork, andresilience, qualities he described as deeply important to the nation. The minister said the players’ effort and commitmentthroughout the competition earned them the respect and gratitude of Nigeriansat home and abroad. “Thank you for giving your all and for representing Nigeriawith pride and dignity,” Idris said. “Even in defeat, you showed character, teamwork, andresilience, and those qualities matter deeply to the nation you represent. “Football has its highs and lows, but your effort,commitment, and fighting spirit throughout this tournament have earned therespect and gratitude of Nigerians at home and abroad.” Idris said the team reminded Nigerians that wearing thenational colours represents courage, unity and perseverance. “You reminded us that wearing the green and white is aboutcourage, unity, and never giving up,” he said. “Hold your heads high, learn from this experience, stayunited, and return stronger. “Nigeria remains proud of you and grateful for the joy andhope you gave us during this competition.” Meanwhile, Abdul Samad Rabiu, the chairman of BUA Group,says he will still donate $500,000 to the Super Eagles of Nigeria despite theirloss to Morocco in the semi-final of the AFCON. The business tycoon had promised to donate the money to theSuper Eagles should the team win against Morocco. The Super Eagles will play Egypt in the AFCON third-placematch on Saturday.
