A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, PeterObi, has charged Nigerians to be vigilant or risk watching their freedomsvanish before their eyes. In a post on his verified X handle on Tuesday, Obi saiddemocracy is more than elections; it’s about protecting dissent, upholdinginstitutions, and respecting rights. The former Anambra state governor was responding to a tweetby former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani. “When governments kill protesters, intimidate judges, punishfree speech, and flout court orders, democracy isn’t evolving—it’s unraveling.First-world and third-world democracies are starting to look the same:authoritarian in practice, regardless of the label. “Democracy is more than elections; it’s about protectingdissent, upholding institutions, and respecting rights. When these pillarscollapse, the system itself loses legitimacy. Citizens must stay vigilant orrisk watching their freedoms vanish before their eyes,” Obi wrote.
