A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the AllProgressives Congress (APC) and political activist, Comrade Timi Frank, haspetitioned United States President Donald Trump. He raised an alarm that Nigeria’s democracy is underexistential threat and could descend into chaos if alleged plans to manipulatethe 2027 general elections are not halted. In a statement at the weekend, Frank accused the rulingparty and the leadership of the National Assembly of plotting to entrench aone-party authoritarian state in what he described as “political genocide”against Nigerians. He called on Trump and the international community tointervene, warning that failure to act could trigger unrest, violent conflict, and a breakdown of law and order. “Nigeria’s general elections scheduled for February 2027 areunder serious threat. If current developments are not addressed, they mayresult in widespread unrest, possible anarchy, and a breakdown of law andorder,” Frank warned. “The ruling party, working closely with the Nigerian Senateunder a highly compromised Senate President, has begun laying the groundwork tomanipulate and rig the 2027 general elections.” Frank urged Trump and U.S. lawmakers to exercise caution inengaging the Nigerian government and avoid legitimizing what he described asillegality and oppression. “Any blanket endorsement risks legitimizing illegality andoppression in Nigeria,” he warned, adding that U.S. intervention could helppreserve stability in West Africa’s largest democracy. Recall that the Nigerian Senate last week passed theelectoral amendment, which had stirred controversy over electronic transmissionof election results. Meanwhile, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, hasinsisted that the National Assembly will not be intimidated by dissents.
