A tense confrontation erupted on Tuesday at the NationalAssembly complex in Abuja as former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister ofTransportation, Rotimi Amaechi, engaged in a heated exchange with policeofficers during the ongoing protest. Amaechi, who joined other demonstrators at the NationalAssembly, was seen challenging security operatives. The former governor participated in the protest to demandthe real-time electronic transmission of election results, a key issue fuelingpublic outrage following the Senate’s rejection of the proposal in the ongoingelectoral reform process. The demonstration, tagged ‘Occupy the National Assembly’,saw Nigerian youths converge in Abuja to protest what they described as asetback to credible elections and democratic transparency. Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi,joined demonstrators a day earlier in solidarity with the call for electoralreforms.
