Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to ex-President MuhammaduBuhari, has said it is insulting for United States lawmakers to proposesanctions on Rabiu Kwankwaso over his role in implementing Sharia law duringhis tenure as Governor of Kano State. In a post shared on his X handle, Ahmad argued that Shariais not a criminal concept and that its implementation does not constitute anoffense warranting punitive action against any individual. He maintained that associating the proposed visarestrictions with Sharia enforcement misrepresents both the legal and religiouscontext of the policy. The post reads, “It is insulting to suggest that the UnitedStates lawmakers proposed the visa ban on Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso simply becausehe implemented Sharia during his tenure as Governor of Kano State in 2000. “Sharia is not a criminal concept, nor is its implementationan offense that warrants punitive measures against any individual.” Kwankwaso has reportedly been targeted for sanctions underlegislation introduced by the US Congress over his alleged role in promulgatingSharia law in Kano State.
