Police officers arrested over ‘accidental’ killing of two passersby in Lagos

Some police officers have been arrested over an “accidentalshooting” that left two passersby dead in the Alagbado area of Lagos state onFriday. Abimbola Adebisi, the Lagos police spokesperson, saidMoshood Jimoh, the police commissioner, has ordered an investigation into theincident. The detained policemen were reportedly chasing suspectedinternet fraudsters, popularly known as “Yahoo boys,” around the area when theyfired the gunshots. Confirming the incident in a post on X, Adebisi said Jimohhas ordered “adequate deployment of personnel to forestall any breakdown of lawand order” in the area. “The officers involved in the unfortunate shooting incidentthat occurred today in Alagbado have been arrested and taken into custody,” thepolice spokesperson said. Adebisi added that normalcy has been restored to the area,assuring that justice will be served and the outcome of the investigation willbe made public. An X user who witnessed the incident said the policeofficers are attached to the AIT division police station. He said the officers, who were on stop-and-search duty, “ranaway immediately” after shooting the passersby, “leaving the unconsciousvictims without aid until they gave up the ghost as they couldn’t get help”. The incident follows a series of cult clashes recorded inparts of the state, particularly in Iyana-Ipaja, Aboru, Badore, Olokonla,Onipanu, and Satellite Town, where at least four people have been reportedlykilled, and several others injured.
