The United States government has issued a global securityalert to its citizens in Nigeria and around the world amid escalatinghostilities between the US and Iran. The alert, issued by the state department on Sunday, urgedAmericans to exercise increased caution following recent US attacks againstIran. The advisory warned that evolving security conditions couldaffect travel and safety, including potential interruptions to air travel. “Following the launch of U.S. combat operations in Iran,Americans worldwide and especially in the Middle East should follow theguidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy orconsulate,” the advisory reads. “They may experience travel disruptions due to periodicairspace closures. The Department of State advises Americans worldwide toexercise increased caution.” The alert also recommended that US citizens enrol in thesmart traveler enrollment program (STEP) to receive timely security updates. The statement encouraged American citizens to follow the“U.S. Department of State Security Updates for US Citizens” WhatsApp channelfor further information. The security notice comes after coordinated US-Israelistrikes on Iranian targets that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and AbdolrahimMousavi, Iran’s supreme leader, and armed forces chief of staff respectively. Iranian officials and regional monitors estimate that morethan 200 people have been killed and over 700 injured since the strikes began. Senior commanders of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary GuardCorps and other defence officials were also reported killed. In the aftermath, President Donald Trump said Iran’sleadership has agreed to resume negotiations with the United States following aseries of strikes on multiple Iranian cities. Trump said Tehran had reached out for talks and that he hadaccepted the offer.
