FEC approves demolition, rebuild of Carter Bridge in Lagos

The federal executive council (FEC) has approved thedemolition and reconstruction of the Carter Bridge in Lagos. David Umahi, minister of works, shared this on Wednesdaywhile briefing journalists at the State House in Abuja after the FEC meetingchaired by President Bola Tinubu. Umahi said the council also approved N5.6 billion foradvanced engineering consultants to handle the design and costing of thebridge. “Recall that we have been to FEC and got approval aftergoing through stakeholders’ engagements. The total recommendation was thatCarter Bridge can no longer be rehabilitated; it should be demolished and thena new bridge constructed,” he said. The minister added that the reconstruction forms part ofbroader efforts by the administration to strengthen critical transportinfrastructure across the country. Umahi added that FEC approved six major projects at themeeting, including highway reconstruction and upgrades in differentgeopolitical zones. The minister said the council is targeting the commissioningof at least four completed projects per zone by May 15. “We are presenting a minimum of four completed projects ineach zone for presidential commissioning by May 15. These are not palliativeworks; they are major infrastructure projects,” he said. The Carter Bridge links Lagos Island to the mainland andserves as a major traffic corridor.
