The Kano State Government has started distributing 100,000 bags of 10kg rice donated by the Aliko Dangote Foundation to support vulnerable households, especially during the ongoing Ramadan period. The official flag-off took place on Saturday at the Open Theater, Government House, Kano. Secretary to the State Government Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the event. The rice is being allocated across all 44 Local Government Areas, targeting approximately 100,000 needy families, including widows, orphans, street beggars, and other vulnerable groups facing economic hardship.Governor Yusuf thanked Alhaji Aliko Dangote and the foundation for the generous donation and for entrusting the state government with direct distribution oversight a departure from past arrangements. He described the gesture as timely and compassionate, aimed at easing the burden on the poorest residents during fasting.Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources Dr. Danjuma Mahmud confirmed that the donation is part of the foundation’s National Rice Relief Programme, which seeks to distribute over one million 10kg bags nationwide. Kano’s large share reflects its population size and high levels of poverty.Officials emphasized transparent and fair distribution to ensure the palliatives reach genuine beneficiaries. They urged recipients to use the rice wisely and called on other philanthropists and organizations to follow Dangote’s example in supporting efforts to cushion economic challenges. The initiative has been widely praised as a significant boost to food security and social support in Kano during Ramadan, strengthening the partnership between private philanthropy and government to address immediate humanitarian needs. Distribution continues across the state with coordinated teams delivering supplies to designated points in various LGAs.
