Senator Ipalibo Banigo, representing Rivers West Senatorial District, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during Tuesday's plenary session in the Senate chamber. The announcement came via a letter read aloud by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In the letter, Banigo formally informed her colleagues of her decision to leave the PDP and join the APC, citing extensive consultations with constituents and political associates.Banigo, a former deputy governor of Rivers State and current Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, explained that the move aims to align politically with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and support the administration of President Bola Tinubu. She emphasized her commitment to advancing development in Rivers State and contributing to national progress under the current leadership. The defection follows internal divisions within the PDP and is seen as a strategic shift to bolster APC's influence in Rivers State ahead of future elections. Senate President Akpabio welcomed Banigo to the APC fold, noting that a seat was ready for her in the ruling party caucus. This development marks a significant political realignment in Rivers State, where Banigo was previously one of the few remaining PDP senators. Observers view it as part of broader efforts to consolidate support for Governor Fubara's administration and President Tinubu's agenda.
