Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed's ongoing silence regarding reports of his potential switch from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has created divisions among his loyalists and supporters. As Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Mohammed faces speculation that he is preparing to defect to the ruling APC, with sources indicating negotiations are advanced. An anonymous PDP insider claimed the governor has rejected joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or reconciling with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike amid the party's internal crises. “He told us that he won’t go to the ADC and he was not ready to reconcile with the FCT Minister... Definitely, His Excellency is going to the APC. He has not told us when he will announce his defection but I know it will be after Salah,” the source stated. Mohammed has previously rejected such rumors publicly, vowing not to be coerced into the APC and criticizing its economic management. In a recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu, he denied discussing any defection. The PDP flag continues to fly at the government house, but no official denial or confirmation has emerged. Special Adviser on Media Mukhtar Gidado declined to comment. A cabinet member confirmed high-level talks are underway: “There is an ongoing discussion at the top. We are waiting for their conclusion. But as far as we are concerned, wherever the governor moves to, we are going with him. He is our political party.” Supporters express growing frustration with the lack of clarity. PDP member Abubakar Kirfi urged direction: “His Excellency is not the first PDP governor to defect to APC. We just want him to address us. We need a direction. We have seen what has happened to our party at the centre and he has not addressed us.” Kirfi added: “Are we making a reconciliation move, or are we seeking alternative platforms? This is the time to decide on a direction, especially from our leader, Bala Mohammed.” The speculation reflects broader PDP challenges, including multiple gubernatorial defections to the APC, potentially weakening the opposition further. Some allies suggest the governor needs time for consultations and strategy before any public statement.
