Senator Saidu Ahmed Alkali, Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, has resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet to contest the 2027 governorship election in Gombe State. The resignation was announced on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, after Alkali met with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. It complies with the presidential directive requiring all political appointees interested in elective offices to step down by that date. In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Umar Alkali Jibril, the former minister expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, highlighting progress made in the transportation sector during his tenure. Alkali, a former Senator who represented Gombe North, was appointed Minister of Transportation in August 2023. He is widely expected to seek the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket to succeed Governor Inuwa Yahaya, whose tenure ends in May 2027. This brings the number of cabinet members who have resigned ahead of the 2027 elections to at least three. No successor has been named for the Ministry of Transportation yet.
