Polish Humanitarian Action (PAH) strongly condemns the airstrikes targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure in Lebanon that took place on April 8th. The toll of this attack is heavy – at least 254 people were killed and 1,165 injured. Within 10 minutes, rockets fell on over 100 locations in densely populated areas, including the capital Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, Sidon, Mount Lebanon, and the south of the country. The devastation in Lebanon is enormous. Many people are still trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings, and rescuers and medical workers are unable to reach all the injured. Local clinics and hospitals are overwhelmed, and there are shortages of medicine, bandages, and blood supplies. Terrified residents do not know how to ensure their safety and that of their loved ones. There are currently no safe places in the country. Lebanon, which has been grappling with mass displacement and constant shelling for over five weeks, urgently needs a respite from the violence. Civilians, doctors, and humanitarian aid workers must be protected during hostilities. Special protection must be offered to the most vulnerable during conflict – women, children, elderly, and people with disabilities. Despite repeated airstrikes, Polish Humanitarian Action's operations in Lebanon and across the Middle East have not ceased. Preparations are currently underway to launch food aid in Lebanon and neighboring Syria, which is also suffering the repercussions of the ongoing conflict – over 200,000 people have already crossed the border between the countries. The organization remains constantly ready to provide necessary support through collaboration with local partners. Polish Humanitarian Action calls for a halt to attacks on Lebanon and for respect for civilians and civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, residential buildings, and collective centers for displaced persons. The lives and health of the people of Lebanon depend on further political decisions.
