Nigeria is expected to commence gas delivery to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, through the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) pipeline by July. Dada Olusegun, special assistant to the president on social media, announced this in a post on X on Tuesday, describing the development as a major step in the country’s gas expansion drive. “Nigeria is expected to begin gas delivery to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, through the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) pipeline by July,” Olusegun said. The $2.8 billion project has, however, missed several delivery timelines. In April 2023, the federal government said the pipeline would become functional in the third quarter of 2023, but the timeline was later shifted, and in June 2024, authorities projected delivery by the first quarter of 2025. On April 11, 2025, Bayo Ojulari, group chief executive officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, said the project had reached 72 percent completion as of the end of the first quarter of 2025. In December 2025, Ojulari said the company had completed the mainline of the AKK pipeline. “By completing this main line, what that means is that we can begin to make all the connections to the main line, which we will do in the earlier parts of next year,” he said. The GCEO had said upon completion, the project will unlock unprecedented opportunities, power industries, energise communities, and propel Nigeria into a new era of energy security and industrial growth.
