Between March and April 2026, the median cost of the Multi-Sector Survival Minimum Expenditure Basket (MSSMEB) in South Sudan experienced a significant increase of 17%, with the food basket rising by 19%. This surge was primarily attributed to escalating prices of essential commodities, including maize grain, soap, sorghum grain, beans, and charcoal. Notably, the highest prices for the MSSMEB were observed in locations such as Ajuong Thok Refugee Camp and Bentiu IDP Camp, among others. The increase in costs has placed additional strain on household purchasing power, compounded by factors such as high taxation, currency depreciation, and poor road conditions, which have also disrupted market access in several areas.
