In the latest Global Price Watch report, the Famine Early Warning System Network highlights significant trends in staple food prices across various regions as of March 2026. In West Africa, prices for staple foods remained stable overall, though slight increases were noted in millet and sorghum in Niger and Chad due to seasonal demand and Ramadan. Conversely, East Africa experienced rising prices for maize, sorghum, and wheat flour, attributed to high demand and tightening local supplies, with Burundi being an exception due to favorable harvests. In Southern Africa, maize prices declined significantly in South Africa and Mozambique, reflecting abundant supplies, while Central America saw stable white maize prices despite above-average levels in El Salvador and Honduras. The report also noted mixed price trends in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, with conflict affecting supply in regions like Gaza and Syria, while international markets showed stability in maize prices but increases in wheat prices due to adverse weather concerns.
