US To Review Aid, Humanitarian Assistance To Nigeria Over Insecurity

The United States government is considering significant changes to its financial assistance framework for Nigeria, prompted by rising insecurity and religious violence. The House Committee on Appropriations has proposed a 50 percent reduction in aid and developmental assistance, contingent upon Nigeria demonstrating measurable progress in addressing violence and protecting vulnerable communities. Should the National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations Bill for 2027 be enacted, Nigeria could lose access to billions of dollars earmarked for aid and development from 2027 to 2028, with future disbursements tied to the Nigerian government's performance on security benchmarks. The legislation also emphasizes the need for Nigeria to allocate matching funds for U.S. assistance and includes provisions to support religious freedom initiatives and enhance the capacity of Nigerian law enforcement agencies.
