On 26 January 2026, the Federal Ministry of Health of Ethiopia announced the country as "Marburg free," concluding the Marburg virus disease outbreak that began on 14 November 2025. The outbreak, which was first identified in the South Region of Ethiopia, resulted in fourteen confirmed cases, including nine fatalities and five recoveries, prompting a robust public health response. The Ethiopian Red Cross Society, in collaboration with government agencies and international partners, has been actively involved in recovery planning to mitigate the risk of resurgence, with a comprehensive operational strategy set to be published in the upcoming Operations Update. Despite the official declaration of the outbreak's end, ongoing recovery and preparedness efforts remain essential to safeguard public health in the affected regions.
