The 2026 Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Index reveals a significant decline in press freedom globally, marking the lowest average score in its 25-year history. For the first time, over half of the 180 countries surveyed are categorized as having "difficult" or "very serious" conditions for press freedom. The report highlights a concerning trend of increasing legal restrictions, particularly those related to national security, which have adversely affected journalists even in democratic nations. Notably, the United States has dropped seven places in the rankings, while countries in the Americas, such as Ecuador and Peru, have also experienced severe declines due to violence and repression against the press.
