The federal government of Nigeria has called on South Africa to take firm measures to curb violence against Nigerians and other African nationals following recent xenophobic attacks. During a meeting in Abuja, Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conveyed Nigeria's concerns to Lesoli Machele, the acting high commissioner of South Africa to Nigeria. The discussions highlighted disturbing reports and videos of protests in South Africa demanding the expulsion of foreigners, particularly black immigrants, which have raised alarm given the historical ties between the two nations. The Nigerian government also expressed its apprehension regarding the deaths of two Nigerians allegedly linked to encounters with South African security forces and urged for the implementation of a memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing communication and de-escalation of tensions.
