World: Epidemic and emerging disease alerts in the Pacific as of 05 May 2026

As of May 5, 2026, several countries in the Pacific region are experiencing ongoing disease transmission, particularly dengue fever and pertussis. In New Caledonia, dengue cases have risen to 1,376 in 2026, with DENV-1 as the predominant serotype. Samoa has reported 159 new dengue cases in the last week, while Tonga has confirmed 53 cases since April. Pertussis is also a concern, with the Federated States of Micronesia reporting 40 cases and Guam detecting 23 cases since 2025. Additionally, Papua New Guinea is continuing its response to a poliovirus outbreak, launching a third vaccination campaign targeting young children.
