The United States has issued a warning regarding the resurgence of extremist threats in parts of Africa, particularly as remnants of the Islamic State (ISIS) regroup following their defeat in Iraq and Syria in 2017. The US counterterrorism strategy highlights that ISIS affiliates have exploited weak governance in regions such as West Africa, the Sahel, and the Lake Chad Basin, where groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) have established control and conducted attacks on both military and civilian targets. The US aims to prevent these jihadist groups from establishing bases that could facilitate attacks against American interests and to protect vulnerable communities, particularly Christians, from extremist violence. In line with this strategy, the US plans to enhance bilateral counterterrorism relations with African governments and provide support through intelligence sharing and partner-force development, while also emphasizing the importance of regional stability for economic prosperity.
