The Famine Early Warning System Network has released an update on the food security outlook for El Salvador, indicating that the lean season has commenced amidst erratic rainfall and risks to primera production. From now until May 2026, many areas are expected to experience Stressed (IPC Phase 2) outcomes due to the early depletion of food stocks and high staple food prices. The situation is particularly concerning in the Eastern Dry Corridor, where some households are facing Crisis (IPC Phase 3) conditions. As the season progresses from June to September 2026, food insecurity is projected to worsen, with a rise in the number of individuals experiencing Crisis outcomes, exacerbated by below-average agricultural yields and increased costs for transportation and food production.
