The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has released its second humanitarian situation report concerning the impact of Tropical Cyclone Maila in the Solomon Islands, covering the period from April 20 to May 11, 2026. The cyclone has affected approximately 150,000 individuals across 161 communities, with Western and Choiseul Provinces experiencing the most severe damage. Educational services have been significantly disrupted, with 84 schools impacted, 16 of which are currently unusable, affecting around 11,194 children. UNICEF is prioritizing support for severely damaged schools and those serving as evacuation centers by establishing temporary learning spaces, while also addressing critical water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) needs and providing assistance to health facilities to mitigate public health risks. The organization aims to directly support between 8,000 and 10,000 individuals, including 2,500 to 3,000 children, through various life-saving interventions.
