The National Universities Commission (NUC) has formalized a $65 million agreement with the World Bank to enhance university capabilities and train an additional 24,000 Nigerians under the Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement Project (SPESSE). This initiative, which builds on an earlier $80 million investment launched in 2021, aims to address the shortage of skilled professionals in procurement and environmental governance within the Nigerian higher education system. The signing ceremony took place at the NUC secretariat in Abuja, attended by various stakeholders, including university representatives and officials from the Bureau of Public Procurement. The project has already established six centers of excellence across the country, developed new academic programs, and is set to further improve the quality of education and training in critical areas of sustainability and procurement.
