The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is taking steps to address the significant digital divide affecting nearly 30 percent of the global population, which remains offline. According to a report from the International Telecommunication Union released in November, over 2 billion individuals lack access to the Internet, hindering their ability to engage in essential activities such as shopping, bill payments, and virtual meetings. The IEEE's initiative aims to develop strategies and technologies that will facilitate Internet connectivity for these underserved communities, thereby promoting greater inclusion in the digital economy.
