The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has advocated for the establishment of more sub-national airlines to enhance Nigeria's domestic and regional aviation sectors. During a meeting with the management team of Bayelsa State-owned Pioneer Airlines, which recently received its Air Operator Certificate, Keyamo highlighted the potential of state-owned carriers to address the current gap in the market, particularly given that international airlines operate approximately 277 weekly flight frequencies. Keyamo expressed satisfaction with the increasing involvement of sub-national governments in the aviation industry and reiterated the Federal Government's commitment to support domestic airline operators through initiatives such as the Nigerian Leasing Company. He emphasized the importance of having sufficient sub-national airlines to compete effectively on regional routes, thereby tapping into the existing market demand.
