A coalition of 52 civil society organizations, human rights advocates, and public interest groups has issued a warning regarding the increasing intimidation faced by civic organizations in Nigeria. This statement comes in the wake of a defamation case involving the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP). The coalition expressed concern that such actions could undermine the fundamental rights of citizens and the ability of civic groups to operate freely. They called for the protection of civic space and urged authorities to respect the rights of organizations advocating for public interest.
