Stakeholders from the Niger Delta, comprising environmental professionals, activists, academics, traditional rulers, women, and youths, have issued a renewed call for the urgent decommissioning of abandoned oil wells in the region. They emphasized that these derelict sites present significant environmental risks that could adversely affect local communities and ecosystems. Additionally, the stakeholders expressed concerns over the divestment strategies employed by multinational oil companies, which they believe lack adequate consideration for the environmental and social implications of leaving these wells unattended. The collective appeal aims to ensure that both oil companies and government authorities take immediate action to address the issue.
