Since May 1, 2026, the city of Uvira in South Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, has been experiencing severe flooding due to heavy and persistent rainfall that caused the Kalimabenge River to overflow. The most affected areas include the densely populated neighborhoods of Namianda and Kilibula in Kalundu commune, where floodwaters have inundated homes, roads, and community infrastructure. Rapid assessments indicate that approximately 7,776 individuals, comprising 1,555 households, have been impacted, with significant damage to 544 houses, including 13 that were completely destroyed. The floods have also led to the displacement of at least 1,110 people, increased public health risks due to contaminated water sources, and damage to sanitation infrastructure, with reports of six fatalities linked to the disaster. The ongoing heavy rainfall and rising water levels in Lake Tanganyika continue to pose a threat of further flooding and humanitarian challenges in the region.
