On March 16, 2026, the United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 2818, which extends the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for an additional three months. This extension allows for a comprehensive review requested by member states to evaluate the current mandate and suggest potential improvements, incorporating the perspectives of the Afghan populace. In light of this development, the Afghanistan Dialogue and Visioning Process (DVP), a nonpartisan initiative based at the University of Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, organized a series of consultation meetings in April 2026. These meetings aimed to engage a diverse group of participants from various backgrounds, both within Afghanistan and in the diaspora, to gather insights on the future of UNAMA.
